Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG 003 2015

The Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG 003 promises to be an entirely new type of car. It's a lightweight, modular race and road car that could redefine how we look at modern race cars.

Not only is he making a Le Mans car for the street that can go from road car to race car, he's shared his latest plans for the engine and chassis design in our comments. And that includes a modular architecture that can swap between a twin-turbo V6 and a twin-turbo V12.

Glickenhaus' plans to drive the SCG 003 to Le Mans, convert it, race it, then swap it back into a road car before catching a bite in Paris, he's disclosed what power plants he envisions for both legs.

The road legal SCG 003 will use a twin-turbocharged V12 with a street-worthy gearbox. When the time comes to race, that will be swapped out with a twin-turbo'd V6.

Glickenhaus says "We are offering pure road and pure race versions, as well as separate road-to-race and race-to-road conversion kits. The car is strong enough and modular so that the race roll cage can be unbolted and the race wing, race seats, race splitter, and race diffuser can easily be swapped back and forth as desired with road seats, a road wing, and road diffuser. The road version still has front and rear roll hoops."

When a forum member asked about the specific plans, Glickenhaus responded:
That's exactly what we hope to do in 2016. We'll set off from our factory in Turin with SCG 003 in road-legal configuration and drive her to Le Mans. Hopefully along the way, car clubs will escort us. In the pits, we will convert her to the race version and compete in the 24 Hours. At the race's conclusion, we'll reconvert her to road-legal condition and drive to Paris for dinner. We hope to do this at several other major endurance races as well, like NY to Daytona. For that, we may need to fit snow tires.
Both Le Mans and Daytona have let the DeltaWing race. Why not us?

Ford to build the new GT, race it at Le Mans

Ford will return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans with an all-new GT car in 2016, as part of a factory program that will also include a two-car GT Le Mans class effort in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. Chip Ganassi Racing is expected to field a two-car GT-Le Mans entry for the entire TUSC season in 2016 as well as the Le Mans effort, with Scott Pruett and new team driver Joey Hand in the lead car.

The planned 2016 effort will mark Ford’s return to factory competition at Le Mans on the 50th anniversary of its first overall win in the twice-around-the-clock French endurance classic.

The race car should debut on track at the 2016 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona. The drivers of the other team car aren't known, but could be sourced indirectly from Multimatic, the Canadian company that is apparently leading the development of the new race car. There is also speculation that the car could be homologated later as a GT3, making it appealing to potential Ford Racing customers.

Ford has a press conference scheduled for Monday, January 12 at the Detroit show, and the FIA's World Endurance Championship has a press conference scheduled for the following day.

Alonso to follow Hulkenberg to Le Mans?

Fernando Alonso could make a sensational debut at the fabled Le Mans 24 hours next year.

Last week, Porsche announced that it has signed Force India's Hulkenberg to race at Le Mans and Spa six hours.

Italy's Autosprint reports that Alonso, who is close to having his full-time F1 seat with McLaren-Honda finally announced, it could be followed by a shock round of extra news.

"Porsche would not be an alternative to McLaren-Honda for Alonso," agreed Spain's El Mundo Deportivo, "but a complement."
The report said Alonso would join Hulkenberg in the third Porsche entry, along with another unknown driver.

"Despite their friendship," El Mundo Deportivo added, "Fernando would not race in the same car as Mark Webber."

The report said the biggest stumbling block to a Le Mans deal for Alonso is the fact that McLaren is a direct sports car-making rival of Porsche.
